Cotton yarn is a heterogeneous material. It consists of a large number of individual cotton fibers that are held together by the twist. The fibers are not uniform in length, cross section, and strength. They are unequally distributed throughout the length of the yarn. Modern mill techniques give manufacturers lots of new ways to spin cotton fibers into all sorts of different yarns.  Some cotton yarn is flat and tape-like so that you can work it up on a larger needle or hook but still have a light fabric.
